Closing Google+ Moderators
Moderators has been a wonderful community to develop and grow these past months, but it is now time for its journey to come to an end. We started this community to create a space for the community owners and moderators on Google+ to discuss common issues and collaborate. It has been so rewarding to see these discussions take place in Moderators, and we would like to thank each and every one of you for contributing to this community!
Moderators will be made inactive this Thursday, Jan 17. No new members will be accepted into our community and no new posts will be shared. As part of my rowing obsession, I'm producing a regular podcast called "Ready, Row! USA" on the international Rowing.Chat network. We're using Google Hangouts rather than Zoom, so that it deposits directly onto YouTube. It's the system that Rowing Chat requires at the present time.
I had a few questions, since I've been using Zoom more than Hangouts lately. Is it possible to put lower thirds on Hangouts any more? I could not get that to function the other day. It's always been problematic, but it did work well at one time. I've been using Hangouts on Air since 2012.
Any other new developments in Hangouts that y'all know of, that I should be looking out for? Is Google going to kill it or alter it that you know of?

Google shut down the Google+ Moderators Community six weeks ago and never bothered to tell anyone
I've been trying to reach out to G+ Communities especially over the course of the shutdown, a process I'd found frustrating. There are few mechanisms for directly contacting community moderators (unlike, say Reddits "message moderators" feature), and there are few forums for G+ Community owners and moderators to get and exchange information.
One of those is the Google+ Moderators community itself, the official Google channel for mods.
I've been posting and commenting there occasionally over the course of the shutdown particularly my statistical analyses of Community size and activity. There'd been little if any response.
I thought it was simply that moderators on Google+ are apathetic. It's not that.
Six weeks ago, without informing anyone, Google effectively shut down the forum. Posts are "HfR", held for review, and unless they're approved by a moderator, they won't appear for other users. The submitter does see their posts in the community and has no indication that the post has not been submitted.
You can confirm this by viewing the community from an Incognito / unauthenticated session. Doing that just now, I realised that the forum had seen no new activity since December 10, 2018.
The two screenshots here show this. The two-column view with the visible "Sign In" button at top right, shows an Incognito view, with the most recent posts being dated 6 weeks ago. The three-column view is what I see logged in as "Edward Morbius", with several posts I've submitted in the weeks since then. I can see those. Nobody else can.

This is not only extremely disrespectful and poor business practice, but it's straight up low class.

The unofficial G+ Owners and Moderators Community (https://plus.google.com/communities/115287855840632692408) does seem to be reliably available presently.
In other news: You cannot rely on the fact that posts to Google+ will be visible to other users, most especially not in Google's own Communities and spaces. Google are systematically dismantling the ability for users themselves to be informed on Google+.
If you're not using an off-Google channel for information already, start doing so NOW.
Again: there is a subreddit available at https://reddit.com/r/plexodus, devoted to the G+ exodus, run by me. You're strongly encouraged to use this. There are also /r/googleplus and /r/google, run by others, or other communities can be created. Please join one or more of these.

Exporting to blogger
I used the "to blogger format" mode of Google+ Exporter, created a blog, and imported the download. You can check out the results at https://c32767.blogspot.com/
Some comments: I have just over the 800 max limit, so I bought the $20 license. The export for < 1000 posts took a few minutes; the import to blogger took longer, I think -- I walked away to get some coffee. The result requires tweaking, which is in progress, so if you scroll down through the blog you will see progressively rougher results. Some of the posts are not worth keeping -- I estimate about a 30% deletion rate. The handling of photographs is not nearly as good as in G+. Note that this is the 1.5 version of G+ exporter, so the photo links may disappear w/ G+. I will try recreating the blog with the 1.6 version. Photo downloads should considerably lengthen the duration of the download and upload.
I want to repeat what Edward Morbius has been saying: the time to do this is now. There are learning curves all over the place, and hidden pitfalls and roadblocks abound.

The export for < 1000 posts took a few minutes; the import to blogger took longer, I think -- I walked away to get some coffee. The result requires tweaking, which is in progress, so if you scroll down through the blog you will see progressively rougher results. Some of the posts are not worth keeping -- I estimate about a 30% deletion rate. The handling of photographs is not nearly as good as in G+. Note that this is the 1.5 version of G+ exporter, so the photo links may disappear w/ G+. I will try recreating the blog with the 1.6 version. Photo downloads should considerably lengthen the duration of the download and upload.
I want to repeat what Edward Morbius has been saying: the time to do this is now. There are learning curves all over the place, and hidden pitfalls and roadblocks abound.

I changed my YouTube brand channel name to a name that better describes what my channel is all about and the traffic increased tremendously overnight. I picked up several subscribers. They must have seen my channel name are were interested. So I suggest you don't use your name alone in a YouTube brand channel name.
If you move your regular channel to a brand account through a G+ Page you can keep all your subscribers and videos from your regular channel. I'm not sure how we will be able to do this after April.
